Frequently Asked Questions About Throws and Blankets
A soft, warm blanket is essential for creating a cosy atmosphere in your home, especially on cold winter nights. Our throws and blankets come in a range of sizes and styles, perfect for any season. The bright coloured Lotus mohair throw is perfect for Summer, whilst the Hellfire lambswool throw brings warmth to Autumn evenings.
What is the difference between a throw and a blanket?
Throws and blankets are both a type of covering used to keep a person warm, but there are some differences between the two.
A throw tends to be a smaller, decorative blanket that is usually draped over a sofa or chair. They are generally made from lightweight materials such as cotton or wool, at Avoca all our throws are made from wool material. A throw can be used to add a decorative touch to a room or snuggle up on the couch, but they generally won’t fully cover a person.
A blanket however is designed solely to keep a person warm and cosy on the couch or bed. A blanket is more functional than decorative.
What are the best materials for a throw blanket?
Here at Avoca, we use a few different materials for our throws and blankets, here are some that you’ll find:
Wool: Wool is one of the best materials for blankets as it’s warm, soft, and durable. Wool gives a lot of heat, so it’s great for those cold Irish days! Our blankets come in a range of wool types such as lambswool and mohair.
Cotton: Cotton is a great choice for a throw or blanket that will be used during summer as it is a breathable, lightweight material. It doesn’t give off as much heat as the likes of wool though, so bear that in mind.
Cashmere: A luxurious, soft, and warm material, cashmere blankets are a great choice for those who want high-quality blanket or throw that will last for many years.
How do I clean a throw or blanket?
The best way to clean a throw or blanket depends on the material it’s made from. Here are some guidelines on cleaning the most common blanket types –
Cotton and Cotton Blend Throws/Blankets:
Machine wash in cold water with a gentle detergent.
Air dry.
Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach.
Wool Throws/Blankets:
Dry clean or hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent.
Avoid wringing or twisting the wool, as this can cause it to become misshapen.
Lay flat to air dry.
Fleece Throws/Blankets:
Machine wash in cold water with a gentle detergent.
Tumble dry on low heat or air dry.
Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach.
Silk Throws/Blankets:
Dry clean or hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent.
Avoid wringing or twisting the silk, as this can cause it to become misshapen.
Lay flat to air dry.
What are some stylish ways to use a throw blanket in my home?
Throw blankets are a versatile and stylish addition to any home decor. Here are some ideas for using them:
Draped over a sofa: One of the simplest and most common ways to use a throw blanket is to drape it over the arm or back of a sofa. This not only adds a cozy touch to the room, but it also makes the space feel more inviting.
Layered on a bed: Another great way to use a throw blanket is to layer it on a bed. You can add it on top of your comforter or duvet, fold it at the foot of the bed, or even layer multiple blankets in different textures and colors.
Rolled in a basket: If you have a basket or a large tray, you can roll up your throw blanket and place it inside. This creates a cozy and stylish look, and it also makes it easy to grab the blanket whenever you need it.
Wrapped around a chair: If you have an accent chair or an armchair, you can drape a throw blanket over the back of the chair or wrap it around the seat. This creates a cozy look and is also practical for chilly evenings.
Used as a tablecloth: For a unique and cozy touch, you can use your throw blanket as a tablecloth. This works well on a coffee table or a smaller side table, and you can pair it with candles or other decor to create a cozy atmosphere.
